Benefits Specialist - TCOOMMII | Texarkana

Job scope: 

Reviews financial Assessment Screenings and Direct Referrals for all TCOOMMI individuals served to identify potential eligibility for SSI/Medicaid, SSDI, Medicare, CHIP, QMB, SLMB, Indigent Medication Benefits, and any other federal or state assistance programs for which they may be potentially eligible. Initiates and schedules a follow-up contact with all persons potentially eligible for any of the listed assistance programs to inform and assist each individual to complete the required application process. Obtains copies of all information and medical records required to submit accurate and valid applications to the appropriate agencies. Acts as appointed representative for all applications filed to receive copies of all follow-up correspondence including requests for additional records, status and disposition of the application filed. Performs all follow-up activities as indicated by correspondence received, including; ensuring that individuals attend all appointments ordered by the presiding agency, completion of appeals, representing individuals at Administrative Law Judge Hearings, coordination of legal services requested, and all other case coordination activities indicated until benefits are awarded or irrevocable denied. Responsible for providing technical support and education to program staff regarding concise screening documentation requirements. Maintains and tracks accurate documentation on screenings, applications, appeals, and awards to meet state contract reporting requirements.

Education/licensure: 

Position requires knowledge and experience in public assistance programs necessary to pass state agency requisite certification to provide benefits assistance to persons with a mental illness or with an intellectual or developmental disability. High School diploma or GED Equivalent. Current valid driver's license in state of residence.

Experience/Knowledge:

Complete knowledge of all public and private assistance programs potentially available to persons with a Mental Illness or Intellectual or Developmental Disability. Demonstrates expertise in the application processes for completion of an accurate and valid initial application through final award or irrevocable denial. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals as necessary to extract accurate and concise personal and financial information. Ability to communicate with a wide range of external agency personnel as necessary to act as advocate and information liaison for each consumer served. Position requires excellent organizational skills as necessary to successfully manage a caseload that may exceed 100 individuals. Position requires ability to identify and access all potential resources as necessary to remain current on requisite federal and state rules and guidelines regarding available assistance programs.
